Ihre überwältigende Naturschönheit machte die Samaria-Schlucht zu einer der berühmtesten und meistbesuchten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Insel Kreta. Sie zieht sich aus einer Höhe von über 1200 m von der Omalos-Hochebene auf 17 km Länge bis ans Lybische Meer. Die senkrechten Felswände, die sie säumen, erreichen eine Höhe von bis zu 600 m. Besonders an der engsten Stelle der Schlucht, der nur 3 – 4 m breiten „eisernen Pforte“, überkommt den Wanderer ein ehrfürchtiges Staunen über dieses Wunderwerk der Natur. Auffällig ist der hohe Baumbestand in der Samaria-Schlucht, der vermutlich auch damit zusammenhängt, dass in der Samaria-Schlucht durch den Gebirgsbach und zahlreiche weitere Quellen auch in den heißen Sommermonaten kein Wassermangel herrscht. Die abgeschiedene Lage hat dazu geführt, dass in der Samaria-Schlucht 14 endemische Pflanzenarten vorkommen und dass die kretische Bergziege (Kri-Kri) dort ihr letztes natürliches Rückzugsgebiet hat. Wer sich nicht zutraut, die wegen des enormen Höhenunterschieds und der Länge sehr anspruchsvolle Gesamtstrecke der Schlucht zu durchwandern, kann auch mit dem Schiff zu dem kleinen Hafenort Agia Roumeli fahren und von dort vom südlichen Ausgang der Schlucht bis zur etwa 4 km entfernten „eisernen Pforte“ wandern. Die Samaria-Schlucht darf in der Regel nur vom 1. Mai bis zum 31. Oktober betreten werden. Der Zugang ist kostenpflichtig.
